When I discovered last week that today is the seventh anniversary of my blog, Notes from The Voodoo Cafe, I couldn’t believe it–I had to go back and check to make sure. And sure enough: seven years. Although it’s my own personal blog, it’s inextricably tied to my life here at CreateMixedMedia: my editor, Tonia, is the reason I really got involved with it in the first place. When we were first discussing the idea that became Living the Creative Life, she gently suggested that it might be a useful thing to have an online presence–for making contact, finding people, seeing what others were doing–and it seemed to me to be the least painful way to do that. I had no idea back then how much I was going to come to love blogging.
It’s not just that blogging provides a platform for sharing ideas and inspiration, although I love that about it. It’s also that it gives you an opportunity to create a community of people who like the same things you like. Seth Apter has written a series of blog posts about blogging that you can read starting here. Excellent advice to which I’d add just this: take whatever you really love–painting, art journals, shopping for paper ephemera–and share your passion with the world. Photos, videos, podcasts–a blog can bring it all together in a way that nothing else can. It’s way more fun and rewarding than I ever would have imagined. Happy anniversary!
