No, Jill is not from Nebraska; Jill is from Colorado, right outside Boulder. And if you’ve seen the news at all, you know that’s a terribly frightening place to be from right now. Jill has asthma, and it was getting harder and harder to breathe, so even before the fires got really bad, she and her daughter escaped to Lake McConaughy, Nebraska (the rest of the family is fine, as is their house as of right now).
Jill didn’t have a computer or even internet service, but she did have her cell phone, and the service was surprisingly good. We talk about her escape and about what it might be like for any artist who’s forced by circumstances beyond their control to have to start over again from nothing. She talks about what you might want to have in a traveling art journal kit, just in case you have to leave in a hurry, and why it’s vital not to save The Good Stuff–the good paint, the good brushes, the good paper–for “later.” Buy the best you can afford and use them *now*–Jill explains why.
