Alternative Art Surfaces: Stone Tiles, Travertine

(This tutorial was previously published in the book Alternative Art Surfaces: Mixed Media Techniques for Painting on More Than 35 Different Surfaces by Darlene Olivia McElroy and Sandra Duran Wilson, copyright 2014; republished here courtesy of CreateMixedMedia.com.)

Travertine tiles may be found in building supply stores. Travertine is a beautiful natural stone that is cut into different sizes to be used primarily in tile applications. I frequently use the back side of the tile because it has a more interesting texture with more nooks. I have painted on travertine with alcohol inks, acrylic paints, polymer mediums, glass beads and mica powders.
